Happy Birthday Dorothy Inez Hoffman Jones, We Miss You

You will like to know your not forgotten and we miss you a very great  deal.  We are so happy you
were able to spend our 50th with us. It is hard to believe our 55th is coming up.

We miss your rhubarb pie, your smile and contagious laugh.  The use of Chocolate drops to curb a cough. Even using a bit of Brownie to take the tickle out of the throat.

The fact that your Dr found a nasal drop that stopped your snoring.  LOL we thought you had died because we did not hear you snore during the night.  What a relief it was to learn the drops did the trick, Dad would have been shocked.  We  tiptoed to your room several times that first night when there was no snoring.

We miss Dad too. We trust your together and enjoying your new future.

Born 29 June 1920 in Little Bear, area Wyoming to Cecil Leroy Hoffman and Dorothy Inez Scott Hoffman.  Married 3 September 1938 in Wheatland, Wyoming.

Worked at Morris Thomas's as a Cook assistant while Dad was a Wrangler there. Moved to Diamond Tail Ranch, Greybull, Wyoming. Worked on the ranch helping Mrs. Flitner.  Dad was a Ranch Hand,
broke broncs and did ranch work.

I was born and after the War started, we moved to Petaluma, California to assist Dad's sister and her husband and family.  Mom's health at that time was not good. The California climate helped her to become active again and lead a great interesting life.  Taught 4-H sewing and cooking, raised large gardens, canned, froze and butchered most of our daily meals. You made awesome bread and cinnamon rolls.  Dad loved your pies. I suspect we all did. We would argue over which kind to make.
You taught us all how to roll out pie crust, and  biscuits, make white and brown gravy and applesauce cake.

You taught us to reach out to our family,  Grandparents, Great Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins, and you taught us much about our families past.  For that I thank you.

She had four living children and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Traveling Tuesday---- Back in Time

A time machine was not needed to go back in time, but the photographs and notes and letters shared did a good job of remaking the event.

My Mother's birthday is Sunday. She has been gone two + years. Went looking for a nice  picture to post of her Sunday. Then finding the pictures of when family came to visit for our 50th Anniversary,
started the journey back in time.

I was saddened to remember one brother and wife did not make the event nor any of his children. We were blessed to have all my other siblings visiting and sharing memories.

With brother bringing Mother to attend we were able to share more with Mom and she shared lots with us. Things we never remembered after we did them and moved on in life until she spoke of the incident.

We were laughing so much in the pictures, some that could have been awesome showed the mirth that was abound.

It was a mending of the soul in many ways and heart wrenching in others.

Our event was Hawaiian in theme and our neighbors came also.  We have lived here since 1970, so they are like extended family to us who are all away from our original home areas.  We were mostly military related people purchasing homes in this area.  We have four families on the block that are sharing our past with us, still and 2 more that are almost that long ago.

Our children went to school together, not always the same grade but the same school. Many of the families all went to the same church in the area and shared rides with each other.

We buried a dear young lady when McDonald's Massacre happened.  We still think of this family, though they moved away due to the grieve it created in that large family.  Our entire community was devastated by that horrid act.

We recently lost a young man of our neighbors he was 59. He was 16 or so when they moved here.
As I said our families share in times of fun and need.

We  even hear by mail from two of the long time neighbors after they retired.  So we can still share about the families at different gatherings.

In many ways our community became a loose bound family.  The pictures of the Anniversary brought it all back so vividly and some of those people have passed on since too.  We still talk and speak to the children and try to support their needs. That is what a community ie family does.

Wanted to share the pictures but they are on a disc and can not remember or figure how to get them off.

Many pictures I had thought to throw away, am thinking of keeping because we are sharing laughter so hard we have tears in our eyes. Yes, men and women and boys and girls all sharing at our incidents of the past that Mom was so eager to share.  Sure wish she was hear to share more of them.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Love you Mom  Dorothy Inez Hoffman Jones.

More Greene Co PA Information

This  link is taken from our web page at ourfamilyhistories.com.

There is much data at this site about Greene Co. PA

Much of my mothers's family came from this area moving to Iowa after the Civil War.

We spent hours, days, weeks, years, garnering this data and I am not sure people are using it to their advantage which was our hope.  We actually have two sites because the data was more than one would hold economically.

Those Places Thursday ------------ Greene County, Pennsylvania

Have you visited this place?  Are you aware of what they have for your researching needs?

Do you share with the distant kin of your family that are on Greene Connections on the Facebook page?  We are swapping pictures of our people of the past.

Do you know the history of this region? It belonged to Virginia at one time.  Many historical events happened within it's boundaries.

Starting you off with an excellent map of the area, region by region.
Greene County Pennsylvania Township Map
Each township is well shown with water and oil wells. It seems that they have struck oil again.

One of my ancestors was born in Morris Township, at least he lived there when his father died.
They moved to other areas over the years. Aleppo, Springhill,  almost every township in the county.
Whether I follow my direct line back or follow his children's movements or his siblings movements they covered the region quite well.

Since a plethora of our ancestors sprang out of this county, I am sure I could research each township for kin.

But first I will share with you some links you may find interesting to read and research.

Cornerstone Genealogy Society
The local genealogical society that I have belonged to for more than 20 years. They are dedicated and helpful and a true asset to Greene County.

Greene County Historical Society Museum
Then we have the Historical society that shows you many of the artifacts that our ancestors used and had while they were alive in Greene County.

Mix pleasure with research and try this one also.
Greene County Tourism

I had to find my ancestors bridge he built and the house and church he built with others help. Covered bridges, cemeteries and the awesome scenery.
