Genealogy and Weather
O yes, weather is a key factor in much genealogy. I suspect what we have just seen the world experience in this last year or so should key up the juices to learn more about the weather in our ancestors times.
Having been teaching and lecturing about genealogy for many years I notice sometimes as speakers we tend to get in a rut or maybe it is not us but our audience who forgets to check all things.
In the mid west there were prairie fires and loss of life, there were dust storms and loss of life. There were tornadoes and hurricanes and floods and dry times that caused much to our early ancestors to have to make adjustments moves or changes.
I recall reading about the big freeze that happened in NYC and of the many that froze to death because of no heat, no food and no one could come check on them. They were depended on the milk man, the produce man, the coal or oil man to supply them with their needs. The papers indicated they thought the country people would all be dead instead their survival rate was much greater because they were more independent and was prepared for the storm. Alas that big freeze happened in a larger area than just NYC but the paper I was scanning was from NYC and the aftermath that came from the situation.
I was a personally exposed to some of the consequences of a very early prairie fire in Colorado. The little girl and 3 siblings survived, along with the father. The mother and other family members perished. She never knew her exact age because the Bible it was written in burned, the church burned and she always estimated how old she was. In later years seeking medical attention, Doctors did not know if they would give her care due to her age for various conditions. Eye surgery is what I am talking of, they did not want to treat her cataracts if she was over 85. A great doctor ended up treating both eyes and her vision was excellent. We later found a distant kin of her Mothers family who gave us her age she was 6 years older than any of us knew. We shared with the doctor this information so he was able to document that age is not always a reason to not do surgery. I have always felt we were blessed by this great surgeon's presence of mind and attitude. She lived 8 more years and was way over 100 at death.

St.Patrick's Day
Ye all be Blessed for it is St. Patrick's Day. It is a time for the wearing of the green.
It may surprise many but almost all nationalities have a smattering of Irish in them genes.
They are a hardy stock and industrious people. They do not all have red hair and blue eyes, but
they are a very special in their keeps.
From very early times to now they are a right pleasant when not stepped on.
We just recently learned our so called heavy germanic roots are really rooted in Ireland.
So whether of fair skin and eyes or dark skin and black eyes and raven black hair they are a
beautiful group of the human race.
So today we celebrate the driving out of the snakes and the exposure to a mortal priest whom helped to shape Ireland to what it is today.

Rootsweb Mailing List System
How many of you are using the rootsweb mailing list program provided to find information in the area of your research? Again I gave a small talk about research and posting to the internet via rootslist the information that you may be seeking. Amazing the blank faces that stared back at me and had not a clue of what a rootslist is.
First let me give thanks to deceased friend John Fuller for creating this great research tool for us to use.
It came about way back when Brian Leverich had rootsweb.com as his and wifes's baby for the genealogical world. Thanks also to Brian and wife for the whole Rootsweb.com event.
You may join an already started list or you may create your on list for: place, name or event. I belong to several that encompass counties and several that cover various surnames. They can cover cemeteries also.
I use the lists as religiously as I use usgenweb.org for information. Alas, some of those sites are hard hit by lack of volunteers to keep them in good shape. But they cover more in short span from home than trying to dig in book. O yes, you have to dig in a book, visit a library either from home or on line but they are the building blocks for my steps to answers. vaorange@rootsweb.com is an example of one.
The next step is their message boards, which prompted me to write about them, along with the group of blank faces that had not heard of these places for research tools.

Will and Probate Records from LVA, the State Archives

You can Interlibrary Loan (ILL) microfilm from LVA (the Library of VA, the state archives). They lend out of state, for free, although your local library may charge for postage. For the list of Orange Co film available, see:

Be sure to list both the county name and the reel number as LVA reuses numbers from county to county. Look to the top of the page, to "for Libraries and Educators", click on this and the ILL link on the menu. Print this info out to take to your local public library so they know LVA's "rules" for ILL. If they've not borrowed from LVA before, this will make things easier for them and therefore for you. I think they lend up to 5 reels at one time. The time period is 3 or 4 weeks. You will have to use the film at your public library although you can print out pages as you wish. A digital camera will take good pictures of microfilm projections or screens. Be sure to look at court records as well as probate records.
Your post indicates an administrator's bond was posted 26 Mar 1743. I'd look at the previous month's court minute records as well as the Mar ones. There should be a record of the appointment of an administrator of the estate. I guess you realize that administrators are appointed when there is no will, executors when there is a will. Generally, administrators are appointed at the first court session after the death. If there is a delay, this will usually be mentioned in the court record of the appointment. Your post also mentions "Accounts rec". This will be a separate court book called Accounts Receivable. I have found inventories in such books. Some of this stuff varies from county to county and I've not looked at probate records in Orange Co. (My folks seem to have passed through that county!) Sometimes, an estate isn't settled until the widow dies or the youngest child reaches 21 or marries. So, do look well beyond the dates you have. Anyway, this should get !
you started finding those records. LVA is sometimes slow, be patient. -------Jo

Twist on Family Reunion
Twists on Family Reunions
Twice this year we have had twists on Family Reunions. I suspect many never labeled these events, Reunions.
I felt in order to enjoy those who came and those whom shared about life with Mom I would think of it
as a Reunion. We had a large turn out and both sides of family and it was a reunion of family and friends.
It makes the memories so much nicer to think about. So the Memorial we held for Mom was my first one this year.
Sunday we again held a large family event encompassing two families groups. A terrific, successful event I do say. We were at a Baby Shower for our first Great Grandchild to be.
We shared this event with our grandsons' father's side of the family and his mother's side of the family.
People we had not seen altogether in many years. So it was a Family Reunion of another type.
People all shared and brought everyone up to speed on each family. Since his Dad's had three siblings and his Mom had 4 siblings it was quite an event. Though two were missing due to health and distance.
I grabbed my camera and fired away so that the baby can look back at this historic first event being held for him and his parents.
I will include pictures of those missing so the baby will know that he was thought of though they could not be there. Then he will know they were all alive at that time. In Case, Just in case he decides to do his genealogy some day.
So when you go to a family gathering re think of what you want to remember it as. I am sure we have many mini reunions and never think of them that way.

Genealogy Fun Day Is
Genealogy fun day is every day we at the Chula Vista Genealogical Society get together in either a large group or small group and share our experiences. My most recent fun day was yesterday at the Escondido Family History Fair.
My first surprise was for a distant cousin whom I have not seen in three years to show up to attend the fair. Hurray she rode in our car along with our lovely new member that gave me a book on Eastman's a couple months back and Virginia who always gives great ideas and thoughts and much fun in our conversations.
We arrive and more fun comes our way. More of our members show up than we were aware were coming.
I was able to see old friends and acquaintances in a very short period of time. We all looked for Connie O but we never saw her face.
The talks were all informative and interesting. Of course you can only attend so many in one day. Twice I had to mentally toss a coin as to which talk I was going to. No doubt that I was going to see Daniel Bartosz
about Native American Indian Research. I have attended his talks for three years now. That is what happens when you have supposedly five Indian tribe lineages. I have found three and the other two are still so elusive. Spirits will walk one of these days and I will be listening.
It is a very educational and rewarding event to attend. Wow, would I love to do a day of genealogy like that for our society. Nah, it is more fun to attend that to put on. tee hee hee. This was sponsored by the
Family History Center, LDS Church so they can provide space, place and funds for this caliber of speakers. They are also the ones putting records on line by the thousands and upgrading and improving our method of access to their records. Thank You for doing that.
We had a great lunch again handled by the Boy Scouts of America. Hurray Scouts, I have a Eagle Scout son and a Life Scout son. I believe in what the scouting program can do to help our young people grow up.
Thank You Scouts a super lunch.
I spent an hour at our booth sharing time with esteemed cousin Randy S. and met other people and shared time with them.
It was definitely a fun Genealogy day.

Cancer has Struck Family Again Asking This
Cancer is a strange cell.
You can go along for years in remission
and then one day it pops its head up again.
If you ever have it you will never be free of it.
Pray for the day there will be a permanent cure.
A small request.....Just one line
Dear God,
I pray that You will guide someone to find a cure for cancer in 2011 .
In Jesus Name, Amen
I have no idea who started or created this but it is so relevant to our situation. Please take the
time to utter this simple prayer in hopes that wishes will be granted.
As I studied our medical genealogy I have learned we have lost many from Cancer and we
have another one in it's grip now and needs prayers.
Thank you to all my family and friends who do this simple request.
