Halloween Side Affects, Ghost's, Fry's, Pancake's, Skeleton and more.

Amazing that Randy Seaver would grab up a GHOST and show their tombstone.  They had a habit of marrying into the Huffman line. Philip Ghost was an interesting adventure.

I went to school with a Skeleton, Kathleen was her name. I had forgotten how she was teased at Halloween about her name until I saw the  post.

I am a descendant of a Fry whom  also married a Huffman later changed to Hoffman.

Was amazed to see how many Pancakes lived near my Fry and Huffman and Ghost's.

My first date ever was with a Grave.

I am a descendant of a Sweet which goes with Halloween also.

Halloween = All Soul's Day ======= What Did You Do?

Well, I actually heard people speak of All Soul's Day and Halloween in the same breathe a couple of days ago.  Which made me wonder what did you do for Halloween in your youth?

We lived in the county, first on a cattle ranch then a dairy ranch then our own ranch.

Dad forbade Trick or Treating for me, not sure what his stance was by the time my youngest brother was old enough to partake in the event, 12 years later so lots of time passed.

I was allowed to go to a Halloween Party we did for 4-H and later older we were allowed to have friends over to bob apples and play games. Trick or Treating was a form of begging and Dad forbade begging.

As a Sophomore I went to a Halloween party at Ann Albertson's home in Petaluma, we played games and danced and chatted and had popcorn balls and candy and cake and soda's. I think we bobbed for apples to.

Changing schools did not matter, no going out on Halloween period. Of course we were reminded why the next day when someone's, cows had been let out or some one's old outhouse got tipped or they toilet papered a person's house.  Someone even set someone's hay on fire and that was a big no, no.

So we did not trick or treat.  Dad would purchase a few candy bars and we  would make popcorn balls and played games.  We generally had a few neighbors in to share time with parents and us to play games with. Monopoly was big, Canasta was big, Guessing games were great. I think we had more fun that going Trick or Treating.

So when our children were born, they did not trick or treat either  until they were teenagers and at that point it seemed safer to trick or treat than go to parties.  They were given a time to go out and come back, revoking privileges if not met.

Our Grandchildren, Trick or Treated or had parties or both.  Wonder what the Great Grands will do when old enough to participate.

Remember All Soul's Day was a keeping factor for remembering to not over indulge in candies and fun.  The Sisters' were very strong on those points.

Wright's of Dracut Mass, Pelham, New Hampshire

Having found minor data on Jonathan and Abigail Wright. Will share it here.

Will also share it appears that Bill West is a cousin from this family line.  Wondering if his West line will ever connect to Harley West's line.  I am also related to him distantly and his wife Deb is related to my husband's family.

So here is what I know, very little. If I had more time in Blackfoot Id. I may have found more information.

Jonathan and Abigail had children,  hurray that is how I got to be here.  One of their children's names was Jesse Wright  and he married Abbey Cook.
Jesse born 19 Nov 1749 Pelham, Mass died 1784  Abbey was born 1739 and died 1784.

Jesse Wright, of Dracut, settled in 1774 on the lot now known as the Davis Nevens farm, which he bought of Bagley and Little, May 29, 1774, for "three pounds of lawful money." The deed, still in existence, was acknowledged before Stephen Longfellow, of Portland, and witnessed by Nathan and Jonas Coburn. Mr. Wright's first log house was just east of Meadow Brook. His brother Joel and Timothy Wright came about 1777.

I found in New Hampshire Birth Records, Early to 1900, records of Jesse and Joel Wright, both born 19 Nov. 1749, and Timothy Wright, 2 Aug. 1744, all born in Pelham, the children of Jonathan and Abigail Wright. Three earlier children of Jonathan and Abigail were born in Dracut, so the family seems to have moved across the border to New Hampshire in about 1742-44.
It looks like Jesse Wright was from Dracut, Mass., and/or Pelham, N. H. From Elder's History of Lewiston  Chris Dunham

from Bill WEST
Sue, I have an ancestress Deborah Wright who was the daughter of Joseph Wright and Deborah Stevens. Their oldest son was Jonathan Wright, born in Chelmsford, Essex, Ma. 24 Oct 1701, died 25 Jan1784
in Pelham, Hillsborough NH. He was married to an Abigail(Unknown last name) who died 10Nov 1779. I have no
sources handy atm, but I noticed the names Coburn in Chris' reply. Deborah Wright married my ancestor Moses
Coburn. Chelmsford was part of Dracut(or vice versa..it's late and I'm too tired to think clearly.)

Hope that is of some help for what it's worth..

Obviously?? Bill has my Jesse WRIGHT's ancestor in his files.????

Would love feedback for the WRIGHT line and thank you Bill for what you sent.

I have other records on YOUNG that I will post for those digging Young also.
Some I can place most I can not.

1961 to 1965 + NAS Lemoore, Lemoore, CA

" Back in our beginning we lived in Sunnyvale, Los Gatos area of California.  We finally stayed at one motel until Fred went overseas on a ship.  He worked for the USNAVY, I worked for Westinghouse.
I was in the division that was military orientated.  My boss wore a lot of gold braid.

When he returned from overseas, some 18 + months later because the Officer in Charge in Guam canceled my coming to Guam, he was stationed at NAS Lemoore, in Lemoore, CA.

Wow, that was just down the valley from where we started at NAS MOFFIT FIELD, Sunnyvale, CA.

While he was gone, I moved back home to parents to help them and learned our first child was on the way. Valley Ford, CA.

So the run way at NAS Lemoore was built three times  do to cracks and damage from heat then from a major earthquake. He is a Plank Member of NAS Lemoore. I think we were number 38 to move aboard.

Some of our major likes we shared was Car Racing,  We went to many events in the Bay Area when dating. His car came off the track from racing. So we were excited to learn that Hanford, about 25 miles from Lemoore NAS  had a race track.

We loved the Crazy 8 competitions and even better was when NASCAR would show up and we could see some of the current drivers at that time. We also got to see and meet some of the Open Wheel drivers that came there.  A highlighted event was called the California 200 and that day was hot and warm and yes we took Edward with us.

Some of the racers were A J  Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Johnny Rutherford, Mario Andretti, the Unser Brothers, and our number one love Fireball Roberts.  We got to meet many of these men back then.

Lee Petty, was there.  I have to find our old program if it didn't go in the lost container in 1967. I thought the Allison boys were there and several others that have moved over to the other side now.
We developed a deep respect for the family of Lee Petty.

" It's races were televised nationally, bragging rights for a small Central California town in the middle of nowhere. The Stock Car Racing Encyclopedia described it as “California’s first high-banked paved superspeedway to be run under NASCAR sanction.” Credit: www.loganmolen.com Posted in The Sentinel.  14 Dec 2013
Every place we have lived we went to the Car Races.
Recently when he went to Michigan he got to go to a race there.
We should never have lost that speedway.  The land was open and reasonable to build on.
Today the tracks are mostly in a more congested environment.  We went to Brown Field when we moved here in 1970 until it closed.

YDNA up date, Thanks Judy Russell

Recently I went to a workshop that left me with more questions than answers.  It was amazing to open my mail today and have someone clarify the air.

Judy Russell thank you for a clear, clean, concise answer to so many questions left running around in my head.

If you are having trouble understanding why Ancestry destroyed our data and wouldn't answer the phone or email for those who were trying to save theirs and yet turn around and put a new test on sale for us to try them again.  Please read what Judy wrote today explaining this so we can understand it better.

Judy's web site and link is here.

Thank You, Judy, again for rescuing us in our drowning of understanding the fast paced moving situation with DNA testing of today.

One can only wonder what a year from now will bring.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun Answered

Yes, that was an easy one for me.  Why, not quite sure but think it had to do with family influence?

We had radio and a phonograph from the time I was small.  Probably because we lived in the country and relied on the radio for news of the community and world.

Back then they did not post a great deal of world news unless critical shocking.
We actually went to the movies to get the clips of the War in between the films being shown.  We always had two films to see and some cartoons.

My first experience with a phonograph was one my Aunt and Uncle had gotten.  You had to crack it up and very carefully put the needle on the record without dropping it or scratching the records. They were Bakalite back then.
Bakelite | Infoplease.com

The records were one song per side.  Later they became multi songs per side.  Even later they changed to plastic material and instead of 78's were 33's.

So when my country raised parents and relatives were able to buy a music album by their favorite singers, I was exposed to their singing.

Don't Fence Me In, by Bing Crosby and then by the Sons of the Pioneers.  It was many years later that I learned Roy Rogers was a member of the Son's of the Pioneers in the beginning.  But the album Dad bought was by Bing Crosby.  It is great to know it was written by Cole Porter for music and words by Cole Porter and Robert Fletcher.

It instantly comes to mind.  I can see my country home and families country homes in Wyoming and northern California when this song runs through my mind.
Don't Fence Me In (song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I loved to hear this song sung and  to sing along with my parents and family.  I know that  many people sang it. Our album was with Bing Crosby. I liked every song in that album and still play them once in awhile because my husband copied them on our reel to reel with Dad's help back in the 70's.

When I want to take myself away from the city I think of this song, DON'T FENCE ME IN
(Cole Porter)

Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above,
Don't fence me in.
Let me ride through the wide open country that I love,
Don't fence me in.
Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze,
And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees,
Send me off forever but I ask you please,
Don't fence me in.
Just turn me loose, let me straddle my old saddle
Underneath the western skies.
On my Cayuse, let me wander over yonder
Till I see the mountains rise.
I want to ride to the ridge where the west commences
And gaze at the moon till I lose my senses
And I can't look at hovels and I can't stand fences
Don't fence me in.
Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies,
Don't fence me in.
Let me ride through the wide open country that I love,
Don't fence me in.
Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze
And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees
Send me off forever but I ask you please,
Don't fence me in
Just turn me loose, let me straddle my old saddle
Underneath the western skies
On my Cayuse, let me wander over yonder
Till I see the mountains rise.
I want to ride to the ridge where the west commences
And gaze at the moon till I lose my senses
And I can't look at hobbles and I can't stand fences
Don't fence me in.
mudcat.org: Origins: Don't Fence Me In (Cole Porter)

The song says much about how I feel and where I prefer to live and how.

Have you ever gone out in the prairie and looked at the sky and the range and seen the beauty that
God has made?  It so reminds me of Wyoming.

My other favorite song is religious: THE OLD RUGGED CROSS.

Folk of Old - Foulk of Today Where Did He Go?

My grandmother was a Foulk,  Victoria Mae but was always called Ida.  My Great Uncle Claude said that when he was born and he started talking he tried to say Victoria and it ended up being Ida.

So some tid bits about my lost Great Grandfather.  Grandma Ida's Dad.

His parents were William Henry Foulk b 1846 in Somerset PA.  He died in 1940 in January before I was born.  My father knew him as a small child.
His mother was Katherine Myers b 30 May 1845 Perry Co. PA, she died 7 June 1922 in Cedar Township, Blackhawk Co. IA

Katherine's mother was Sarah Elizabeth (Jane) Foulk. Yes Katherine married her cousin.
William and Katherine had 12 children.

Harvey Edward was the oldest.  He was born in 18 Oct 1867 in Illinois.  He is in the 1870 census with his parents.
In 1910 he were in Eagle, Blackhawk IA
In 1920 he is in Platte township 22 North E #9 Wyo. An area out of Wheatland.

The story goes he went to Seattle with a shipment of Wheat that was to go to Russia.  They have no idea what happened after.

I did find a man of that last  name on the  1930 census in Los Angels  with a young wife Nora.

I have learned that other Foulk were in Los Angeles at this time.  Was this him or not.

Many said he went to Russia, some say buried in basement or under a hay stack.

Their marriage obviously was rather rough.

He was married to Margaret Mae Eastman, whom I had contact as tiny my Father said and I  wrote to her often over the years until she died in 1958 in January and I was a Senior in HS.
The US Government lost all my letters pictures and mementos I had from her and others in a move. I could sure use those letters.

They married 19 Oct 1892 Blackhawk Co. IA

She later remarried.  Anyone found Harvey Edward Foulk?

A Birthday Past and One is Coming

At one time October was littered with Birthdays on all sides of our family.

An Uncle, A Grandfather, A Son, a Father,  and the list goes on.

Then it dropped back to  having August with 9.  Now that is back to 5.

July had 5 still does.

June had 5 now has 4.

What month do you have the most birthdays from Grandparents down to you?  Do you contact your Aunts and Uncles which would increase ours ?

It started with our first born being born 10:10 minutes past his Fathers birthday.  As a Father he had a daughter the  day after his.  We also had a daughter that month March.

January was cousins a lot and one daughter.  Many close friends were in January, they are now gone.

Feb is grandson and cousins.

Then March mentioned above.
April is big month in sister in laws house.
May was Dad and Aunt and Uncle three days in a row.  My Dad, My Aunt on Mom's side and My Uncle, Dad's sisters husband.  We seem to have a lot of serial runs of 3 or more.

June had Mom, grandson, cousin, niece. Not counting Anniversary's.

July was big Anniversary, with birthday on that day by grandson, my birthday, my cousins birth  day, my sister in laws.

We have November with 4 yet an December with 4 also.

So what does your year stack up like.  We have an event of some type each month. With 5 Children and ten grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, I had 3 siblings and husband had 3 siblings.  Our parents came from families of 5 or more for siblings so lots of cousins.

Celebrate Family History Month.

What Date was Grandfather Born?

Digging through the files and checking here and there, I found nothing exciting happening but the fact my ancestor was born on a Saturday, and he survived. Many of his siblings did not.  He had only two living siblings. An older brother and a older sister, with the sister marrying his wife's brother down the road.

He was born 9 May 1891 Moravia, Ia to Franklin Cornelius Hoffman and Samantha Abigail Duvall. This was a Saturday.

The world seemed very quiet at the time he was born. No Famous People, no famous event but he survived.  For his family that itself was a major event.
Cecil Lee Hoffman we are glad you made it. I am still trying to prove and disprove all the stories you shared with Rich and Hartley and I.

Grandad Carl Fremont Jones was born 10 October 1887 on a Monday. He was also the last living born child of his family. He had older brothers and 1 sister. He was also born in Iowa and somewhere near Nashua area.
Grandad we are glad you and your brother were not killed in that crazy horse and buggy and horse race to the house. We are sad your brother ended up with a broken back. You both survived and had families. Thank you to you both.

2 October 2014 Followup Water Tower in Wyoming.

On 2 October I posted a picture of an old water tower.  My question to the history buffs and genealogists was do you know where this is?  Do you know what it represented?

It is the first thing the eye sees coming into town that is visible for visitors.

It is the water tower for the Old Rawlins Prison or as known today as the Wyoming Frontier Prison.

It was closed before we got there, missed it by 15 minutes. I wanted to see it for myself. Since we have
knowledge of a family member being there until someone else recanted their story. It decimated this human being beyond comprehension.  It is still not known how long they were incarcerated, still digging.

Yes, it was closed some years ago. They run Halloween Tours there.  What a thought.

We took many pictures walking around the outside.
http://www.wyomingfrontierprison.org/pages/history.html

Of course we had the Hole in the Wall Gang not far away and many other characters of scruples not accepted by society. Range Wars and political offsets happened to create even more prisoners.

About Scottish Prisoners of War

Last Saturday at the workshop I was telling attendees that there are lists of the early Scottish
Prisoners of War who came to America early.

1650 to be exact for when the information refers to.

No I do not get credit but I did read it and want to share it with you all whom read this.

Passenger List – Ship “Unity” | Scottish Prisoners of War…

This blog is probably extremely helpful for anyone with early Scottish ancestry.

I was looking for SCOTT, but I did find STEWART, TAYLOR, JAMESON and GRIMES
many other family or collateral family names just on this list from Captured at Dunbar in 1650.

Looking at the second set of names I see MURRAY and IRWIN.

Looking farther down I see MERROW,(Morrow), lots more STEWARTS and the names go on.

Please go to this persons site request to follow them because they have much information here for you to learn.

Passenger List – Ship “Unity” | Scottish Prisoners of War…

Diane Rapaport  does an excellent job on more references at the bottom also.

Geni - Scots Prisoners and their Relocation to the Colonies, 1650-1654 Project

This is all I can say but blogs are very helpful in research.
Thanks Diane for this information and others.

Idaho Falls, Idaho Sept 2014

Idaho Falls, Idaho, has made many changes since I visited there in the late 1990's.

They have taken along the Snake River and made a River Walk, hotel, this large display of the eagles and the babies in the nest and other items.

I loved the man made falls when I was there before, something about the water falling and splaying about is calming and beautiful.  I did not take pictures of the Falls this time since I had done that before.

My younger brother lived in this area for some time and is now near it again.

They appear to have lots of water yet I heard mention of not as much rain fall as needed and water is more scarce.

This is part of my time line for this year.  What are you doing with yours?

Bosler, Wyoming, not far from Wheatland, and Mom's home.

Bosler, Wyoming and who has been there.

Map of Bosler WY | Bosler Wyoming | MapQuest.com

Bosler is in Albany County of Wyoming.

Jalan Crossland sang about Bosler in a song called Bosler.

Bosler - Wyoming Ghost Town

I did not visit the Furniture Store but I did buy a STARBUCKS drink at the General Store.
Having not set foot in the town since 1994, my heart was sad at the remnants of the town.

Of course, I have different reasons for wandering through this area.  My Dad punched cattle in the region and he was aware of the HOLE in the Wall Gang, as a youth.  His brother told a very chilling tale as a 5/6 year old in Wheatland about one of the gang.

Mixed feelings because this route through Wyoming is some of the prettiest there is to see. The new freeway saved the state from probably becoming over run and turned into the mess Jackson, Wyo is dealing with. The highway was smoother and easier to travel than #80 with the thump thump thump going down the road. If you ever broke your back that vibration wears on you after awhile.

No you can't go 80 on that road there is farm equipment on it and they are generally very large in nature and take up most of the road.  These Ranchers and Farmers are courteous drivers also.

I love to wind up the ridges and down the valleys below and see the Antelope and the cattle and the other critters out and about in the fields.  We stopped many times on this last trip and took some great pictures of nature and animals.  After all it may end up like Bosler and not be there when I try this trip again.

The strip mining is everywhere it seems.  Mixed feelings about the strip mining. Oil rigs and other
digging is happening on a daily basis.

Fortunately, we still saw cattle out on the open range area.  Not near as many as days gone by but they have not gone away yet.

Tom Horn--Wyoming Tales and Trails

Tom Horn Photos - View of the Clay Ranch

I have been up on Laramie Peak, my deceased cousin took me there for the view. It is awesome to be
able to see so far and so much.

The other pictures on the Tom Horn page are accurate for how buildings were built then. Grandad's barn was built like that and my brothers home barn in Idaho has the same log structure for it's base.

A Wyoming Titan of Industry: Frank Bosler | American Heritage Center (AHC) News

Dad and family all talked about the famous horse Steamboat that was a bucking horse.

Hopefully, reading about places like this give you a better idea of life and times, in not to far back in time.

I wish Dad had wrote his book.

Workshop Review

Wished I had taken pictures, the interaction between members between events was the best we have seen in a super long time.

We were happy you came and shared and shared and cared.

We all came home happy and tired but feeling you were really getting what we were attempting to share with you.

Much credit goes to the Chart Chick for her ideas and thoughts and charts she shared.

Research is always easier when you can share and cross check and discuss the potentials of information. It can be regionally, locally or distantly it makes a difference to share.

All of the events went better than we hoped and it was awesome to see the idea catch as it moved around the room and people shared.

I am hoping the 20 attendees will share in January if these ideas helped to get the family to think a little more about family and how we lived in the past. Even if the past was only 20 years ago, it makes a difference.

As one person said, if we did this question every 4 or so years the answers would so many times change.

It would almost be like a running diary of their growing up and living life from small child to full fledge adult.

The easy to make heirloom of a tablecloth with signatures and some one suggested dates added is even more fun.  We started the societies to have for future generations.  Just think if you were there your name is going to kick around for quite some time. Or at least that is our hope to happen idea.

Some said for small families use a pillow for the signatures.  Wedding gifts, baby shower gifts, birthday party gifts all same theme idea.

I was thrilled to see some of the things I have been speaking on for years was reiterated by Cyndi Ingle's when she was here. Some forms are definitely more helpful and can reverse negative results by thinking in reverse.

We gained one new member, four new faces and 16 members attended, those who didn't really lost out on a super event.

FREE October 4th Workshop

10 a.m. to 4 p.m, in the Community Room
at the Bonita-Sunnyside Library, 4375 Bonita Road

Genealogy can be a solitary hobby. How often have you tried to interest your family in their family history and your genealogy research? If you’ve been greeted by “ho hums” and “I don’t have time,” we have the perfect workshop for you. The CVGS Seminar Committee has planned a day of ideas and projects to spark that interest in your family, with special focus on getting the kids ‘hooked.’

The first of five sessions, “Create a Keepsake” will show you how to have your family help create an heirloom that’s fun and practical. You will laugh when you see what it is.

The second session is titled “Storytelling.” Bring a short episode to share with the group - just a minute or two. It can be funny or dramatic, from your life or a distant relative’s. You’ll learn how the sharing of stories around the dinner table will get your family to open up. And how the children love to hear of their parents’ misadventures! Family history can be fun!

Bring a sack lunch, and we’ll eat picnic-style on the patio (weather permitting). Coffee, tea and water will be provided.

After lunch you can try your hand at an artistic project in “Design a Family Crest.” We will offer a brief overview of heraldry and show how you can get your family to design their own coat of arms. If your ancestors had a family crest, please bring it; perhaps you will learn something about its symbolism. And, here’s more fun for the kids – you’ll get some good tips on getting them to design their own personal coat of arms. What little boy wouldn’t want a crest with a T-Rex on it?

The fourth session, “Pictures with Captions,” will show how old family photos can provide a fun family activity. Bring copies of old photos (the ones from the 1950’s can be a hoot!). We will show you how comic-style ‘speech bubbles’ will get the family giggling and trying to top each other with funny captions.

We will cover “Family Genealogy Charts” in the final hour. You will receive a packet of useful charts with instructions on how to use them. If you’re a genealogy beginner, bring information on your parents and grandparents and our member experts will assist you. For the more advanced, we will offer useful information; and everyone will take home a large family tree chart to impress your family.

We will provide materials. This will be a great interactive event, so don’t forget to bring a short family story, copies of old photos, a sack lunch, a family coat of arms if you have one, and information to fill out a family tree.

All this, and a great Door Prize, too, supplied by Janet Hovorka (the “Chart Chick” and owner of www.FamilyChartMasters.com), who is providing the large family tree charts! And it's FREE!!

This is a FREE workshop for all persons to attend, intended to help beginners and seasoned researchers engage with their family members in learning about their family history.

Wyoming Find, Do you know where this is?

Do  you know when it opened and when it closed? Did it house women?
