Thankful Thursday 30 June 2011 Nature made from God

This has been a very long hard, trying yet enjoyable fun exciting month.  Mom I so miss you.  I just know what is happening is not what you had planned at least not the way it is playing out.
Yesterday would have been Mom's 91's birthday. I did not get to see her for her 90th and nor were her cards and letters shared with me at Christmas when she wanted me to re read them to her.

Burbank and Jamboree was a enjoyable interlude away from family things.  I met old friends and hugged dear old acquaintances. I was introduced to and found new genealogy family and relatives.

Having attended several talks, O I missed some I truly wanted to see but God obviously had other plans.
I truly believe, if meant, it will happen otherwise accept what you receive and be thankful for that.

So as I was hunting for pictures today I found some that helped to soothe the soul and mind. I am truly a lover of nature and the beauty that it beholds.  A weed is not a weed unless you call it one. It is just another plant placed here by God for us to either accept or deny. After all lettuce is just a hybridized grass, yes you eat lettuce your eating upscale grass.

I am thankful that my parents taught me to appreciate nature, to respect nature and to be mindful of the non respect to our earth. Thanks Mom and Dad,  I now hope you can enjoy some of these as I do.

Tuesday's Tip Think about the File Name

A day of thought and reading and reading reminds me that we all need to stop and smell the roses before we save something.

When an article comes in or e-mail with family information, think about how you label it.
Not just putting it in a folder of that surname, with date.
I am going to start a cross reference for locating my data.

I am also going to consider using more cloud than desktop or back up drive.

I discover I have many articles that are cross information for me due to family marriages.
I also have cross information on travel, places, events.

Wondering what one does when family members inter marry into the line like several times.

Thankful Thursday 23 June 2011

Thankful Thursday

I am really Thankful everyday. I am thankful for my family, for my friends, for my neighborhood and for being alive.

Being grateful that I can walk, talk, computer work and read and write.

Truly happy that we are not hot and baking in the heat, nor are we blowing in the wind as in other places of the nation.

I am most appreciative of the few records I was able to garner from Mom's even if I left more than half of them there due to no time to go through them.

I pray I have my worldly things in order properly with a competent executor and supportive family when my time comes to leave.

Tuesday's Tip Books We Use

Having read both Marian and Heather's blogs. I think the topic deserves some comment.
I wonder how often I have offered advise to people but not always given them a concise reference of books to potentially acquire to help in their research.

I know I am an avid fan of William Dollarhide, Map Guide to American Migration Routes, 1735-1815. book. I recommend this book to every genealogist working genealogy in the United States.

I  know I refer them to George W. Schweitzer's books for each state, that he did.

Thinking on this I am going to go one step beyond and print up a flyer with what I think are
critical books for any area for Beginners and Intermediate Research.  I also feel Advanced can get in a rut as much as  Beginner's can get confused.  Again as creatures of habit (rote) we sometimes do ourselves in with repetition and over look what we need to see.

We need to encourage others to use some good basic sources for the development of good habits.
We also should encourage others to try new things and not get so in a rut.

There are some good basic books out there for assistance.

 My top books would be:
1. William Dollarhide's -Map Guide to American Migration Routes, 1735-1815.

 2. George W Schweitzer's State books, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland etc.

 3. Ancestry, The Source, &  Printed Sources

 4.  The Handy Book for Genealogists.

 5.  Val  D. Greenwood," The Researchers Guide to American Genealogy"

When doing region work the list changes by additional books being added.

I recommend people to read  Will Books. Do you realize you can piece a family together just reading Will Books many times? I love the books about "left mail in the Post Office", Land Deeds, Probate books, Church Record books, Tax lists and business license registers.  Of course do not forget Census records whether in book form or otherwise.  But they are not always the answer to what your looking for.  Again these books are generic in nature to any area.

For specific areas, they have some really great books for each region, locale.

I hope this was of some help to those who read it.

Monday Madness, Yes Madness Monday regarding JONES

I just decided to post this after all,  I realize that many things written, posted and said are not always accurate.

Seems I was taught that a long time ago when I started researching surnames. First, I learned I had three JONES lines, later learning I could add 2 more.

My original goal besides medical research was to gather the knowledge of the families to the waters edge.
Going to  Europe etc would come later. If you take the male names it probably would not take long to come to the waters edge before 40 years arrived. If you add the female lines it is going to be a forever on going process.

My first major challenge was determining which of the 5 Henry Huffman's was the one mentioned in Mom's letters, papers and the picture book documents.  It took 3+ intense years of tracking each line to determine which father was my ancestor not collateral kin. It was helped with the sharing of information amongst my Aunt's and cousins through out the United States.  I suddenly was exposed to cousins' MOM almost forgot about but we developed a pleasant friendship over the years.

Then Dad said,"my turn when are you going to work our line".  Well Grand Dad was still alive, but he was like pulling teeth to get him to share. The sharing he did brought about more intrigue and more determination on my part to resolve issues he presented.

I read many documents and many, many printed stories, ie sources supposedly that talked about Dad's lineage.  The problem was the facts did not line up. I gather today it would be called a time line of sorts.

I finally took a gamble and reached out on the internet to other JONES researchers of this lineage that I did not know, were from other lines of this Jones Clan.  I learned many interesting stories and fortunately met some cousins that had documented their files well.

This prompted a cousin in Kansas and I to determine to write to England for more records on
the Captain of the Mayflower in the off chance some of these written stories could be laid to rest.

It was very interesting what they wrote back, instead of tossing the story out we were told to embrace it because the records said the story some held to was true.

So just because an American printed history book says things, it also has to be checked out. There are lots of records held in the United Kingdom that would probably help many people break brick walls if they would actually reach across the pond for information.

Stories can be so wrong and they can be so right, but they are stories until you can make them a fact.
Proven Fact with British Records, German Records, Irish Records, or any proven countries records.

Sentimental Sunday, Brother's surprise Visit

Wow, it is exciting to see the genes have been retained that created our spontaneous behavior.

I get an e-mail on Friday asking if I am going to be home Saturday from my brother.  No further word,
later I call and say you headed this way.  He was evasive at first but finally admitted he was thinking of it.

So being my Father's child I knew he(brother) was going to be on the road soon.  It reminds me of all the great trips we would take on a moments notice or so it seemed and yes some times were.

Dad would come into the house from work when he still worked days and say, Mom, you have anything happening? Generally, MOM would say," no, what is up? " The next thing we knew we had to haul extra feed and make sure water was topped off for animals. Dad would call a neighbor friend and say "could you" and within an hour we would be packed on the road and singing songs.

We would have had the milking done, the pigs, chickens, calves, rabbits and other chores about done when he got home from the Feed Mill around 6 P M.

We would go up the road to Dallas, Oregon to see our Aunt Ruth and Uncle Fred.  Or we would go south to Palo Alto to spend a night and day with cousins Ralph and Nadine.  Generally these trips south were just a long day but once in awhile an activity would mean a over night. What fun, we had Dean, Daryl, Ivan, Jeannie and Tommy to play with. We learned many cool card games and ball games were played.

Oregon meant a long trip and generally we got there about breakfast.  There we played with our cousins: Jerry, Linda and Ken Feil.  Ken was very small then, so long ago. Years later I spent summer and baby sat them and worked the bean fields for school clothes money. Learned to dance skate then and loved skating.
Today I am not sure I can stand on the skates.  More stories about skating down line to tell.

So because we even would head out to Wyoming at the last minute if Dad felt or Mom felt there was a need. It took more planning but we did leave generally within a week or a day of notification depending on situation.  Once we just took off and surprised family from California, Nevada, Utah and lots of places in Colorado and Wyoming. We ended up in Wheatland, Wyoming last.  Mom's parents home.

I remember how much fun it was to surprise people and how excited they would be to see us.

I used to go from Lemoore Naval Air Station to Valley Ford or Sunnyvale doing the same thing, after marriage and Aunt and Uncle moving to California.

Dad was great for saying Gerald do you have duty this weekend, good we are on our way and we would come down to San Diego for 2 days.

We were a family of surprise travel.  I hope we some how retain a portion of that, there is nothing so great as to have family show up and a share time.  I think nothing is so important as family sharing.
So the children got to see their Uncle and Aunt today for Father's Day visit to their Dad. SO COOL

Don yes we missed you and thought of you.

Surname Saturday JONES, Dad's family in Honor of Father's Day

Jones, This line comes from England not Wales.  Christopher JONES Sr. owned a shipping fleet one of largest in the world at time of his son's birth. Christopher JONES Jr. was a  son of his. He was also the Captain of the Mayflower long ago. Christopher's family was English not Welsh, Abbey said.

Story goes. Wife was aboard the Mayflower with him. When they went back to England of course he got sick and later died. When wife remarried it was to the man that purchased Christopher Jones JR Fleet.
It seems both Sr and Jr died fairly young. Have in file from Abbey in England.
The new husband brought Teague back to United States of today, English Colony then.  The wife really liked the Mass. area.  Did not want to stay in England.

Teague born Nov 1620 in Mass sourced in American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI)

Teague himself married an Indian woman of prominence in local tribe. Rahamanha.
They had several children: one daughter ma a Nickerson, Josiah, Samuel, Jeremiah and Teague Jr.
I believe there were at least two more sons and 1 more daughter proving is very hard.
Josiah b 1652 in Yarmouth Mass, marries Elizabeth Berry dau of Richard and Alice Berry.

This JONES line is the lineage of my Dad Ray Dee Jones Sr dcd.  born Waterloo, IA died Santa Rosa, Ca.
He has been gone a  long time and I miss him still today.

Follow Friday, I do Follow Many Bloggers

One of the first I follow is:
http://genealogytipoftheday.blogspot.com
John Michael Neill is author and is always giving tips  to assist in ones's research. It may be something I know and have forgotten to use or something completely new.  A great refresher if forgotten. We are people of rote and if we not remember to constantly try knew we tend to forget some of the learning.

Thomas MacEntee's  Geneabloggers site. Self explanatory, great work Thomas.genealogy-blogging-events-week-june-1724-2011 from geneabloggers.com - StumbleUpon

Of course I follow his family blog also.

Genea-Musings by RandySeaver
Informative, and educational, Varied topics and events are covered.

I follow Marian's, Maven's, Dear Myrtle and a host of people that I can not even begin to mention tonight.
I love to read about different and varied activities and events that happen in places and with people.

I like Tina's, Heather's and to be honest I have not read a blog that I have not liked yet. Sometimes they are more dry some times they are exciting but always informational.

Blog away blog away, never stop is what I say.

Thankful Thursday 16 June 2011

Jamboree is over, now is the time to give more thanks to those who helped to make it a success.
All of the SCGS members, volunteers, vendors, speakers and attendees.  A large Thank You to you all.

I want to say thanks, a very huge Thanks to Thomas MacEntee for the Blogger bags we received as attendees, with all the material for us to use and be so thankful we were given. The creating of the Bloggers Group, thanks and the beads were wow.

Saying, Thanks to Geni.Com for the great grandsons romper, the great chat we had and look forward to doing this again. The Ice Cream Social was fun. I will extend my subscription or give to  my son. Thanks, I have used Geni.com since it was first shown at Burbank. I like it for many, many reasons: ease of use, sharing with whom we wish, security, not to mention the cloud concept also before Cloud was popular. I have just become a Great Grand Mom.

Thanks to all the people who assisted in filling the Bloggers Bag and what was put into it: Heritage Makers, Light Impressions, My Heritage Family Tree Builder, World Vital Records, Archives.com, Family Chart Masters (Generations Maps of old  I love the name change.),Family Search,  Family Roots Travel, Family Tree Magazine, Family Tree Dna, GenealogyBank, Genealogy Gems Podcasts, Genealogical Publishing Company, Heritage Makers, Legacy Family Tree, National Institute of Genealogical Studies, Maureen Taylor - The Photo Dectective, Photos Made Perfect, RootsMagic, Wiki Tree, & Ancient Faces

These groups, people and organizations help to make Jamboree what it is today.

Some of these people I said Thanks to on the floor but many I did miss. Seems their booths were packed with attendees getting information. Isn't that great news to hear.

I just thought since it is Thankful Thursday that I should post this now for all to know I care about the thoughtfulness that this displays.

Tombstone Tuesday with out the stones

I gather fatigue has reached out and claimed a victim. I am ready to bury some events and resurrect some new ones.

Having met many old acquaintance at Jamboree, I realized I could possible scout for ideas for Seminars, Speakers, Book Sales, Newsletter articles and other events that affect genealogists or family historians.

My mind has names, more names and events and ideas floating around like a merry go round.
I am hoping to capture some as they float by my mental vision for future use. Jamboree is so
great for so many great reasons.

Camaraderie (friendship) is abound all around the Pavilion and Convention Center area. You can even wander across the street to some of the eateries and find the same atmosphere in the businesses.
Of course, they ask, "Will you be here another day? Will you be coming back?" No, not in a negative way, a very refreshing, we are glad your here attitude.

I always feel I need to give back for all the work they do for us to have such a great event and donate a portion of my time in respect to the work they do. I even learn things when doing this, meet more new faces share thoughts and come away with more ideas whirling around for either acting on or burying down the road.   Giving back can give great rewards in ways not expected, do try it some time.

It never ceases to amaze me how much one can learn by listening and absorbing the comments by fellow researchers. Of course, some times I like to add a tidbit also. Sometimes it generates an entire new topic,
evolving from the past conversation.

I wonder how many came away with new thoughts on topics, ideas for presentations, activities that can be done and the over all feeling we can make this bigger and better by applying some of these ideas to our own group and let them mull them over for they could not attend and be exposed.

Cousin Heather Rojo went home and created a new event within 24 hours. I love that enthusiasm.
Hello New Hampshire, your in for a real treat.

What if there isn't "anymore"?

For Ruth, Shirley, Shirley Sis, Shirley daughter and granddaughters , Anne, and family and friends whom may be hurting now.

One day a woman's husband died, and on that clear, cold morning, in the warmth of their bedroom, the wife was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't "anymore".
No more hugs, no more special moments to celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat, no more "just one minute."
Sometimes, what we care about the most gets all used up and goes away, never to return before we can say “good-bye”, say "I love you."

So while we have it, it's best we love it, care for it, fix it when it's broken and heal it when it's sick.

This is true for marriage.....And old cars... And children with bad report cards, and dogs with bad hips, and aging parents and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it.

Some things we keep -- like a best friend who moved away or a sister-in-law after divorce. There are just some things that make us happy, no matter what.

Life is important, like people we know who are special.. And so, we keep them close!

I received this from someone who thought I was a 'keeper'! Then I sent it to the people I think of in the same way... Now it's your turn to send this to all those people who are "keepers" in your life, including the person who sent it, if you feel that way. Suppose one morning you never wake up, do all your friends know you love them?

Let every one of your friends know you love them. Even if you think they don't love you back. And just in case I'm gone tomorrow:

I LOVE YA!!!

Live today because tomorrow is not promised.

Monday, D-Day Remembered

Today  I was going to post the pictures of my ancestors that were involved in D Day and relatives of family.
Alas my scanner has retired for unknown reasons.

I want to mention Aubie D COOPER, husband of my Aunt, I miss Uncle Pete, his first child learned to walk with me in the yard in Petaluma, Ca while she visiting so she could see her husband stationed down the coast.  He had five children. One was born days apart from my second child. We were very close.  Auntie where are you?  I think Utah has swallowed you up. USARMY

I want to mention my Joseph COLLINS, husband of my Aunt, who became a Baker after the war. He had two children. I had a doll he gave me for many,  many years.  I still write to his children, and grandchildren. One granddaughter came to MOM's services of Rememberance in January. USARMY

My Dad's brother Gerald Oliver JONES, he and his wife are both deceased now as is his second wife.
He was at Pearl Harbor when the planes came in. He run out of ammo in his pistol he carried and literally threw his gun at a Japanese Pilot and hit him in the head. The pilot crashed. Very few were armed when this event happened and the lookout towers had guns but no ammo. He used to get so stressed about how un prepared they were for an attack. He had two boys, we still communicate, also. I cared for him when he was ill from Cancer until his death, with help from Hospice. We shared a love of Rocks, warm, cold, soft and hard ones. If you love rocks you will understand that statement. He served 20 years in the USNAVY.

Dad (Ray Dee JONES) was a Coast Watcher, in California with his brother in law Comillo MORELLI both are gone. 4 children we still speak.
Comillo had three boys and was married to  my Aunt Etta. They are all gone. I still keep in touch with these boys because they were like brothers to me for many years.  We lived on the same ranch. He had two or three brothers in the war. They used to fly over the ranch at times and tip the wings.

Donald Leroy (ROY) HOFFMAN my Uncle who served. 1 son and 1 adopted daughter we write.US Army
Fred FEIL my Aunt's husband (Ruth) whom served both gone. 3 cousins left behind I write to often. USARMY
William PARRISH, Aunt's husband( Marie), 3 boys two survive we communicate.

One surviving Uncle who served as personal guard to Gen. Eisenhour and can tell some real neat stories of his tour in the service.

One Aunt may have had husband that served but he I was not very familiar with.  She was oldest in
this family and if so was remarried.

Husband's Uncle whom died in Africa during the war also.

I am sure that there are other family members in all these lines sidways that served.
FOULK, EASTMAN, JONES, SCOTT, HOFFMAN, WARDEN, LANGDON, MORROW, TUTTLE, FULLER,APEL,DREW,JOHNSON, GRITZNER, HULSE, DUVALL, PLANTS, YOUNG. BROWN, JIPP, PENTICO, NANKE, YOUNG ETC.  WYOMING AND IOWA AND CALIFORNIA.
